It was announced on 23 September 2020 that Amnesia: The Dark Descent would be made open source. The same collection was released on the Nintendo Switch on 12 September 2019. The Amnesia Collection – which contains The Dark Descent, its Amnesia: Justine expansion and the sequel, A Machine for Pigs – was released for PlayStation 4 on 22 November 2016, and for Xbox One on 28 September 2018.
In addition, the game's soundtrack is available for purchase and a free content expansion Justine has been released, as well as many fan-made expansions and stories for its unique "Custom Story" game mode. A collection of five short stories set in the world of Amnesia, written by Mikael Hedberg and illustrated by the game's concept artists, was also made available. Originally released independently via online distribution, the game has since been published in retail by 1C Company in Russia and Eastern Europe, as well as THQ in North America. The game was critically well-received, earning two awards from the Independent Games Festival and numerous positive reviews. The game features a protagonist named Daniel exploring a dark and foreboding castle called Brennenburg, while trying to maintain his sanity by avoiding monsters and unsettling events.
The fallout, however, will not be only “theoretical” but the graphics themselves will deform as you proceed on your path in madness, giving life to some truly distressing effects.Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a survival horror adventure video game by Frictional Games, released in 2010 for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems, in 2016 for the PlayStation 4 platform and in 2018 for the Xbox One. The result of this poutporri, however, is something more than the sum of the parts, resulting really spot on in its intentions and probably the perfect mix to accelerate your beats beyond measure.įor example, the mechanism to determine your sanity is interesting, one of the two parameters in addition to physical health that can determine the gameover: a “graphic” indicator will inform you as you continue exploring the castle if your brain is still able to interact correctly with the reality that surrounds you or if you have already crossed the line. However, it is not only the particular visual that detaches Amnesia from the family of graphic adventures to which the game aspires to belong: within a classic gameplay, filled here and there with various puzzles, there are in fact different influences deriving from FPS or survival horror. On the other hand, everything is built to perfection to create a sense of anguish and claustrophobia, starting from the omnipresent darkness, which can only be broken by using the oil and lamps that you will find in your explorations, up to the first person view, so that the player can see only with the eyes of the protagonist.
The main actor of Amnesia is Daniel, a boy whose origins and motivations are initially unknown to us, who wakes up in the dark manor surrounded by a strange liquid that is not difficult to identify as blood, but that only in the continuation will he be able to make you guess its true nature if this may already seem a situation not exactly pleasant, the fact that the poor man is completely forgetful of his identity will only increase the tension of the first moments of the game, bringing the nerves to guard levels from the beginning. On the other hand, it is the developers themselves who make the cards very clear, advising even before reaching the initial menu to position yourself in a dimly lit room and use a pair of headphones: the ensuing immersion will almost make you believe that you are physically in the Brennenburg castle which is the backdrop to the events told and the terror that grips the protagonist will soon be yours. Here, if you are part of this second category, stay away from Amnesia: The Dark Descent, one of the most beautiful independent titles that I have happened to play in this part of late summer, but at the same time a game that harbors that terror capable to remain etched in your nightmares for a long time. Fear is one of those emotions capable of triggering conflicting responses: there are those who crave it as a sweet companion, looking for that adrenaline that makes us feel still alive, and those who shy away from it fearful, hiding behind their own shadow and wishing only to preserve hair and coronaries.
